Platform Height vs Working Height – What You Can Actually Reach

When choosing a scaffold tower, the model name usually refers to the platform height – the height of the deck you actually stand on. The working height, which is the height you can safely reach, is roughly two metres higher, because most people can work comfortably about 2m above the platform.

So if you need to reach around 6 metres, you will typically want a tower with a platform height of about 4 metres. Matching the platform height to your task this way stops you hiring a tower that turns out too short, or paying for one larger than you need.

If you are not sure which height suits your job, our team can help you work it out. You can also read our scaffold tower hire guide for more detail on choosing the right height and setting up safely.

Which Tower or Podium Should I Hire?

Every job is different, so here is a quick guide to what each tower and podium suits:

  • 1m, 1.2m & 1.5m Podiums – low-level indoor work with frequent repositioning, such as painting above a staircase, fitting alarms, plastering or decorating.
  • Stairway Tower 3m – working safely over stairs and split levels where a standard tower cannot sit level.
  • Boss Tower 1.2m–4.2m – general trade work at moderate height, such as guttering, soffits, fascias and refacing a gable end.
  • Boss Tower 5.2m–8.2m and above – higher outdoor work such as rendering, roofline access and reaching two-storey elevations.

Narrow width towers fit through standard doorways and tight access points, while double width towers give a larger, more stable platform for longer jobs. See current rates on our price list.
